Midway School Scrapbook

This is a partial copy of the scrapbook; the actual book and schoolhouse are located at the Homesteaders Museum in Torrington, Wyoming.

Ode to the Midway School

Little old school house that sits by the road

We have such fond memories of you.

We started our school life within your walls.

To your teachings we've tried to be true.

Our lives have taken us far from your door.

Many times we've been lost in life's flow.

We think back to our beginning with you

When life was very easy and slow.

The things that we learned were simple and good

Reading, writing, figures, and to spell.

Those things we have used In this life of ours,

And we're glad that we learned them so well.

Yes, many students have passed through your door

Some famous, some good, and some unknown.

But all of them had their beginnings here,

Your teachers started them on their own.

Romances sometimes began in your room.

Lonely cowboys came hoping to meet

The girl who taught reading, writing and sums,

Who might become a housewife so sweet.

We always remember our heritage,

Honesty, faith, work, and to be true

These principles we have kept all our lives.

Yes, little old school house, we love you!

  • After the spring of 1949 the Midway building was no longer used as a school but continued until 1950 as a voting place. From 1950 until 1974 the Midway schoolhouse sat empty on the prairie no longer of use to anyone.

  • In 1973 the Burge Community Club bought the building for $1.00 and then donated the building to Goshen County to be put on the Goshen County Fairgrounds.

  • In 1974 the school house was moved into the Fairgrounds and set on a cement foundation.  Remodeling became part of the Bicentennial celebration plans for 1976.

  • Mrs. Alice Berry and her colleagues in the Burge community raised $450.00 toward the moving and refinishing expenses. Many more people donated furnishings, equipment, books and materials. With grants from the Wyoming Bicentennial Commission, matched by the Goshen County Commissioners, a total of $3,200 had been expended refurnishing and restoring the school after it was moved from its original location to the Goshen County Fairgrounds.

  • In July, 2000 the Burge Community Club was notified by the Goshen County Fair Board that they wanted the Midway School repaired or moved, or it would be torn down.

  • Burge Community members started seeking funding to move the building to the Homesteaders Museum, three miles away.

  • In January of 2002 The Midway School was moved to the Homesteaders Museum
